Approximately fifty vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Vehicles, walls and postboxes were defaced, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they stated in a release.
Police report they were notified late on Wednesday evening, when a individual noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a reddish fluid.
The substance had been applied in the shape of a swastika, they stated.
Police then found multiple other marked cars and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations banning the public display of Nazi symbols.
Officials say initial examinations suggest the liquid was probably human blood.
"Currently there is no clue as to where it came from; authorities are not yet cognizant of any injuries in relation with the occurrence," they commented.
City officials announced they were attempting "to unravel the mystery" and have requested to the community for details.
A high-ranking political figure said the incident made him without words and required to be solved quickly.
"This act affects the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the far-right violent incident five years ago," he stated on social media, recalling the killing of nine victims by a gunman aiming at people of migrant background in 2020.
