EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.

In related legal developments:

  • A US district judge has blocked attempts to cut security grants to local governments that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The judge stated the action was “another example” of tying federal aid to adherence to directives.
  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city prior to the holiday period, alongside an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to accept dozens of individuals from the US in return for increased assistance, following signing a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Additionally, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit to demand the stripping of a political figure’s name from a prominent cultural institution in Washington DC.

Analysts point out that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a wider ideology in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy strategies.
