The fast bowler Poised for a Key Part in Ashes Series

Test match action

Pat Cummins has secured 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

The Australian selection chief the selector has confirmed that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest kicking off on the 21st of November in Perth.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the prospects of taking part.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and there are permutations around that, not only his injury, but further aspects," he commented.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a key capacity. With luck it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand last month after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

He has a history of spinal problems, with recurrences in multiple past seasons leading to absences from three Australian summers in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to make the squad for the series.

The selector indicated that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against India as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and mentioned that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games in any case. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for another day, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
